We’ve all been there. The phone rings. Caller ID shows Unknown Caller or a phone number from a state where you’re sure you don’t know anyone. Is it a bill collector? Telemarketer? If you’re not on the Do Not Call list, more often than not, it is a telemarketer. Even then, some calls still trickle through. So you answer the phone. “Hello? Hello?” Wait for the computer to realize they actually got someone to answer the phone, and then wait for the call to be transferred to a live person (if you are lucky). You can hang up, but they will call back. Again. And again. And yet again.
In an earlier blog post, we talked about having conversations with robots. But what if YOU got to have the robot on your side instead? Well, someone who works in the telecom industry named Roger Anderson developed a way to do just that. Through his business Jolly Roger Telephone Co., he developed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) bot that uses algorithms to talk back to the telemarketers as if they are talking to a real person, and the results are hilarious!
Hang on a Second. I Have a Bee on Me.
Anderson set up an “opt-in whitelist” for callers who phone his house. When you call, you get a message saying if you a real person, press any key and you can get through to the house. The phone number is then whitelisted, and the caller gets through to the house. If not, then the caller realizes they have reached a machine and hangs up. Even if a telemarketer pushes a button and gets through, Anderson arranged to be automatically notified by email, so he can redirect the caller to the AI bot.
Two years later, he has yet to have any telemarketers get through to his house! This idea further developed into the AI bot answering the phone with a couple of recorded “Hellos” followed by some “Yeahs”, “Sures” and other responses to give the telemarketer the idea they were talking to a real person. The repetitive parrot routine is great, but after a few responses Anderson added in some random, absurd comments that take the caller on a bit of a ride. Comments like, “I’m sorry I wasn’t paying attention. Could you repeat that?” “Whoa, there is a bee on me. Hang on a second.” and “No way! Did you see that? Are you watching the game?”
You can hear the AI bot program at work on Jolly Roger’s YouTube channel. What do you think? Would you want to have a program talk to telemarketers for you? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
