Technology is changing and improving by the day. At the rate that society uses electronics, we come to expect more from it and want the technology to be better and faster, and the faster we get it the better. Advances in technology can improve and expand our everyday experiences at home, work and during play. Read on to see what is being developed this year to super-size your PC experience.
Cortana, Can You Hear Me Now?
When it comes to speech recognition, there are two fields of operation. When a user is in close range with the microphone close to the mouth, this is called the “near-field.” In the near-field, audio quality is better and is louder than any surrounding noise. When the user moves further away from the microphone, they move into the “far-field.” This can be anywhere from three to twenty-three feet away (think Kinect or Smart TVs). Microsoft and Intel have been working on improvements so that Microsoft PC users will be able to give commands to Windows 10 Cortana from further away using far-field speech recognition technology. This technology will compete with Amazon Echo, especially since Cortana can do specialized PC tasks such as access the cloud, check email and more.
Bluetooth Brush Up
Bluetooth creates the ability of electronic devices (like phones and computers) to connect wirelessly using radio waves. Each device that contains the chip can pair up, allowing us to use wireless keyboards or speakers. As you might have experienced, when the paired devices move further away from each other, static starts to grace the radio waves just like your favorite local radio station fading away as you drive out of town. With the latest update, PCs will be able to communicate wirelessly with devices anywhere from four hundred to thirteen hundred feet! It will also be able to transfer data at up to two Mbps (Mega bits per second), which is twice as fast as the previous update. Just think of how much more efficient the headphones, speakers, mice, keyboards or other devices you pair with your PC will operate!
ROY G. BIV and Beyond
Not only is distance increasing when it comes to being able to speak to and connect with your PC, but you could be able to see your computer from further away, too, with upgrades to the visual display. Besides equipping more computers with edge-to-edge screens, 4K screens and HDR (high dynamic range), technology creates a more brilliant viewing experience. Traditional HD monitors contain over two million pixels (2,073,600 to be exact), whereas a 4K monitor contains four times as much, checking in at almost 8.3 million pixels (8,294,400 again, to be exact). HDR is the ability to display a wider range of colors, brighter whites and darker blacks. These two innovations combined allow for a more vivid picture, closer to how we see colors in real life.
