Late one afternoon a Rhode Island police department was infected with the CryptoLocker virus. Typically spread through e-mail, this malware essentially holds the computer’s files ransom until the owner pays the requested amount of money to the hackers.
In this case, an application that was required for daily operations was rendered completely inoperable and unfixable by the department’s IT provider. After the initial attempts to solve the problem, CMIT Solutions of Central Rhode Island was called. Our team worked throughout the evening to identify all affected files and restore them from backups. Within hours we had the critical application back up and running, and come morning the police department was back to normal operations without any ransom money being paid.
