Larry Deniston, President and Owner of CMIT Solutions of Southwest Michigan, broke the news this week about a Tech Support Scam that has reached Southwest Michigan. In an article posted on MLive.com/The Kalamazoo Gazette Larry warnes local businesses, non-profits and citizens about the phone scam.
A client of Larry’s received an unsolicited phone call from a person claiming to be from “Windows”. The person claimed that they had monitored excessive activity coming from their business computers. They requested permission to connect to the computer so they could fix the problem. Larry’s client told the person that he has IT support and will contact them. The person hung up.
The scam is simple, a person calls and infers that they are from Microsoft and need to fix your computer. The want to remotely connect to your computer to “Fix it”. They then try to charge your credit card for the phony fix. They act like they find issues with your computer, but in reality they may install malware on your computer.
What should you know.
- You will never receive a legitimate unsolicited tech support call from Microsoft or any tech provider.
- Never let someone you do not personally know or a company you are not doing direct business with access your computer remotely.
Finally call your local CMIT Solutions office if you want protection for this or other scams.
