About the Owner
Tom Shirey is the President of CMIT Solutions of Lanier. Tom has worked in technology for 36 years. His career started in the United States Navy where he was assigned to operate and maintain the Central Computer Complex on a Los Angeles Class Fast Attack Submarine, the USS Jacksonville (SSN-699). After the Navy, he lived and worked in Connecticut for a company designing the future IT systems that would go on US Navy Submarines.
Tom moved to Georgia in the early 90s to get his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at Georgia Tech. Upon graduating, he worked as a designer and developer of computer-based training systems with roles as a Software Engineer, Project Engineer and eventually taking over as Director of the software engineering department.
He is particularly skilled at being able to convey complex topics in an easy-to-understand way. This ability led to his spending the next years working in business development. His product knowledge and easy-going manner was a great fit to build relationships with customers.
Tom has been a featured speaker at the Gwinnett Technology Forum and for the Singapore Defense Science and Technology Agency speaking on Technology issues and the use of Gaming technologies for military simulation.
Tom graduated from the University of New Haven in New Haven, CT with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Masters of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He is a member of Eta Kappa Nu, the Electrical Engineering Honor Society.
He enjoys spending time on Lake Lanier with his wife Susan and their Irish Wolfhound, Cailin. His son, Calvin works as a designer of Cellular Antenna networks in the Duluth area and their daughter Rachel works as a paralegal in Buckhead. He enjoys boating, skiing and running; having run the Peachtree Road Race now for 17 consecutive years.
