Tarrant County grows more connected by the minute. And that makes carrying around your laptop computer, either for work or pleasure, a lot more practical. We all know the familiar destinations for wireless Internet access - Starbucks, McDonald's - but there are so many places getting connected that it would fill pages to name them all. I got an email that Microsoft was running a contest (it ended 5 July) for small businesses to win 5,000 gallons of gas. That's what When I got an email about $20,000 - depending on if your gas id $3.79, $4.79 or etc. However, the contest is over - sorry.

In any case, I think the contest site is worth 5 seconds to check out - Bumptheslump.com. The tips it gives, such as using Microsoft Outlook to track makreting efforts, using Microsoft publisher to do in house printing and using Small Business Server to have a virtual office are quite focused on generating awareness for Microsoft products. However, the tips, nevertheless are useful.

Earlier this week I downloaded a regular supply of Microsoft updates for Windows XP. As has been the usual case, the updates were downloaded automatically via Microsoft's automatic update utility. I've been using this utility for years with no problem, but recently, every now and then programs simply, just don't work.

Wedding vows. The short-but-meaningful phrases we promise to our loved one the day we tie the knot. Be it in sickness and in health or for richer or for poorer, we make a pact to stick together through it all.

But what about the trials and tribulations of 40-hour work weeks with sick kids at home, and late night board meetings while dinner's expected on the table by six? Making it work through those times could be the ultimate test.

If your laptop or desktop computer leaves a bit to be desired in the speed department (assuming it's not due to malware or insufficient system memory), you may want to consider swapping out the original hard drive with a new type of disk—a solid-state hard drive. Solid-state drives (SSDs) differ from their conventional hard disk drive (HDD) counterparts in that they have no moving parts.

There’s been much speculation and rumor-mongering about an event happening on March 8th, 2012, that might knock “millions” of users off the Internet. Alarmists claim “the FBI plans to shut down the Internet” on that day. While we don’t normally comment on every virus/malware/Mayan-apocalypse rumor that pops up on the Internet, this one actually contains a smidgen of truth...

"I’ve just completed the move of my office to a bigger and more aesthetically appealing location, and although all the specifics were quite overwhelming we made it. However, what I expected to be the most difficult aspect of the move (i.e. the data, wiring, systems and telephony migration) turned out to be the smoothest I’ve ever experienced in all my years in business. ...
"As owners of a very busy law practice, we cannot afford to lose valuable time to computer problems. We have had experience with many different IT people and not one of them compares to the quality of service we receive from Larry and his team. CMIT provides us with all of the service and support we need and is always responsive to our issues. Hiring CMIT is one of the best business decisions we...
"Finally, an IT firm that knows what they are doing! After spending thousands of dollars on our prior provider, we were left with a system that routinely crashed and programs that would freeze. Larry and his team came, assessed our system, and had us up and running the next day. Not only were we up and running, but our system was faster and more secure than ever. The response turnaround is...
"This past summer, we brought CMIT on board as our IT Solution Provider and as part of our support plan, installed a BDR (backup disaster recovery) unit.  It was explained at the time that we signed up, that in the event of a problem with one our protected servers, the BDR would be able to “stand-in” as a “virtual” server, while the CMIT technician repaired the downed server.   ...
"For our [clinical research facility], it was better to have a preventive plan in place so that if something did break, we would be ahead of it, and it wouldn’t break instead of waiting for something to happen and then fix it. So, now CMIT is monitoring everything, and we haven’t had any issues so they can catch the problem before it even happens. "
"CMIT is all about peace of mind, and literally, it doesn't cost you anything because you are saving the money on me working on the computer when I'm losing business. In today's economy, you don't want to be late sending bills out, you've got to be out there because if you start falling behind you're going to see the amount of income drop dramatically. So, Greg and CMIT make us look more...
"Whereas our systems were originally only getting backed up on a monthly basis, CMIT was able to come in and now they are automatically backed up to the server. We had a center in the DFW area that did lose everything. They made a phone call to CMIT, and CMIT was able to restore their data within a couple of hours. We’re monitored on a 24/7 basis, so even if there was something that were to...
"The way CMIT does business is just much more suitable for our type of business environment. We have deadlines and critical schedules to meet, and we need to be moving forward at all times. CMIT provides data on a monthly basis, which allows us to look at trends and be proactive with our decisions and our methods for improving our system. Every time my system improves, that means my efficiency...
"CMIT dealt with my local backup needs so that if I just need to get one specific piece of information, they can actually do it remotely from their office and get my people back and going. If I do have a catastrophic disaster that takes my entire building, I have laptops and everything else that I can have up immediately. I can use my web-based information storage and be back up and running...
"We pride ourselves that we are the company that gives instant customer service. We were getting to a point where it was extremely difficult, and we didn't want to lose our customer base. We wanted to also expand. I said, 'I need somebody to do something to allow us to be the company that we started out to be and to continue and to grow.' CMIT has helped us to do just that.   "
